DJI drone for firefighters: Matrix 400 is the new ally in emergencies

June 27 - 2025

Matrice 400 is the ideal DJI drone for firefighters that is revolutionizing firefighting and rescue missions: with 59 minutes of battery life, radiometric thermal imaging camera, O4 link at 40 km, and IP55 protection, the new model allows them to locate hidden outbreaks, coordinate ground teams, and operate safely in even the most extreme conditions.

Why the Matrix 400 is a “game changer”

59 minutes of flight time and endurance of DJI’s new drone for firefighters

The Matrix 400 offers up to 59 min of forward flight and 53 min of hovering even with payload installed, while maintaining operating speeds of up to 25 m/s. In practice, a single battery can cover the entire cycle of a flame front, reducing takeoffs/landings and risks to operators.

The sealed IP55-rated shell ensures operability under heavy rain, dust or snow, in temperatures from -20 °C to +50 °C—conditions common in both summer fires in the Apennines and alpine-padanian winter emergencies.

Payload up to 6 kg and video connection to 40 km

Four E-Port V2 ports allow up to seven compatible payloads, weighing up to 6 kg, to be mounted. This allows the camera, beacon and speaker to be placed side by side in a single mission, optimizing deployment time.

Using the O4 phased-array antenna system, the drone transmits HD video up to 40 km and can switch to 4G network via cellular dongles to maintain signal even in valleys or shielded urban areas.

DJI drone sensors and functions for firefighters

Zenmuse thermal imaging camera and integrated LiDAR

The H30 series integrates wide-angle camera, 4K optical zoom, radiometric thermal, and laser rangefinder, ensuring recognition of hidden outbreaks day and night. The drone combines rotating LiDAR, mmWave radar and color fisheye sensors to detect even high-voltage power lines at night, penetrating rain and fog.

Smart Detection: up to 1000 targets in one click

With visible + thermal fusion, Matrix 400 detects vehicles, people or hot spots and supports custom patterns, going as far as mapping more than 1,000 objects in a single photo. Ideal for counting outbreaks, vehicles or isolated people in an evacuated area.

AR Projection and Vision Assist

Power lines or other frontal obstacles are highlighted in AR on the radio control, simplifying low-altitude navigation, while four low-light fisheye sensors provide color image even in half-light, improving situational awareness.

Compliance of the new DJI drone for firefighters.

The DJI Matrice 400 comes ready for institutional use because it incorporates an ADS-B In receiver with dual antennas capable of intercepting cooperative air traffic within 20 km: rescue helicopters, state aircraft and firefighting aircraft appear on the radio control screen in real time, allowing firefighter pilots to apply the “see & avoid” rule without additional radio calls.

On the European standards front, the drone is EASA Class C3 certified – a prerequisite for operating in Standard Scenarios (STS-01/02) and for drafting simplified SORAs under ENAC. The C3 marking, combined with multi-constellation GNSS navigation systems with RTK support, reduces risk documentation and expedites emergency flight clearance.

Full integration into the CNVVF chain of command is provided by DJI FlightHub 2, a cloud platform that, with the Matrix 400, enables:

*Simultaneous multi-screen livestreams** from the engaged UAVs, viewable in the regional operations room or on the DOS tablet;

  • Remote control of the aircraft and payloads (camera, beacon, speaker) to direct filming without interrupting the operation;
  • Real-time mission planning (geometric routes, slopes, linear inspections) to adapt strategy as the fire evolves.

These functions, already adopted by several Regional Directorates, create a continuous air-ground flow that shortens decision-making time.

Operational data security

For operational and data security, DJI offers, in addition to AES-256 encrypted telemetry, “Local Data Mode” that interrupts any Internet connection in the Pilot 2 app: useful when operating on critical infrastructure or scenarios with confidentiality constraints. In addition, TB100 batteries with 400 charging cycles and self-heating system ensure flight continuity even in extreme temperatures, reducing the risk of unplanned stops during an emergency.

With record-breaking autonomy, multi-spectrum sensors and AI functions, DJI Matrice 400 is the ultimate solution for firefighting teams who want to improve speed, safety and precision of interventions.
